Biography

Isabel Briggs Myers was born in Washington, D.C., on October 18, 1897. She was the only child of Katharine Cook Briggs and Lyman James Briggs to survive infancy. She studied political science at Swarthmore College and married Clarence Myers in 1918.

During World War II she developed the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator to help match workers to wartime jobs. She iterated the four dichotomies (E/I, S/N, T/F, J/P) that define types including INFJ. She died on May 5, 1980. Wikipedia notes she typed herself as INFP.

Reputation

Isabel co-created the MBTI with her mother. Gifts Differing remains the standard statement of her type theory. The four-letter definition of INFJ (Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, Judging) comes from the Myers framework, not from Jung’s original text.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gifts Differing the official MBTI doctrine?

It is Isabel's definitive book on type theory and application, widely used in MBTI education. The living instrument, norms, and certification path are maintained by The Myers-Briggs Company, which evolved from her original work.
